Categorization of your contacts is a useful feature that helps keep your work and personal contacts separated, which helps keep you organized. This article outlines how to assign contacts, phone numbers, and conversations into a category or sub-category in Dispatch.
It is recommended to categorize from the 'All Categories' filter. To do so:
- Tap on the
(menu) on the top left - Tap the 'All Categories' category
However, you can assign contacts and numbers from the contacts section of any category. Here are the ways you can assign categories from each tab in the bottom navigation bar (pictured below.)
Messages
While in the 'Messages' inbox, you can assign one or more existing individual or group messages to your work and/or personal category, and their accompanying sub-categories (if applicable.)
To assign individually from within the conversation:
- Tap the 'Messages' tab on the bottom navigation bar
- Tap to enter the conversation you wish to assign to a category
- Tap the overflow menu
at the top-right of the screen - Tap 'Categorize'
- Click the category or sub-category you wish to assign the conversation to
- Tap 'Save'
To bulk-assign conversations:
If you want to assign a larger number of contacts/numbers to the same category, the most efficient option is to assign from the inbox with the bulk-select option. Here's how:
- Tap and hold the first conversation you want to categorize to activate the bulk-assign feature
- Tap the other conversations you want to add to the same category or sub-category
- Note: the conversations will be highlighted in green with a checkmark
- When you're ready to add to a category, tap the
(assign to category icon) at the top-right - Click the category/sub-category you wish to save the contact/phone numbers to (you may only select one category/sub-category)
- Click 'Save'
Calls
While in the 'Calls' tab, you can assign any existing call log history from your contacts or any phone numbers to your work and/or personal category.
To assign from the call history list:
- Tap on the
(menu) on the top left - Tap the 'Uncategorized' category
- Tap the 'Calls' tab on the bottom navigation bar
- Tap and hold the call logline (name or phone number) you wish to assign to a category
- Note: you can select more than one call line to categorize at this point & the conversations will be highlighted in green with a checkmark
- When you're ready to add to a category, tap the
(assign to category icon) at the top-right - Click the category box you wish to save the contact/phone numbers to (only one category/sub-category can be selected)
- Tap 'Save'
Contacts
If you're in the 'Contacts' tab and want to directly assign contacts/numbers to a specific category (work or personal), you can do so easily.
- Tap on the
(menu) on the top left - Tap the 'Work' or 'Personal' category (depending on which category you want to assign to)
- Tap the 'Contacts' tab on the bottom navigation bar
- Tap the
on the top-right of the app to view your contacts
- Note: a green checkmark will show next to the contacts that are currently assigned to the category you're viewing
- Scroll through the list and check the box(es) of the names you want to assign
- Tap 'DONE' to save those contacts to the category
